> Will Google eventually buy Digg?
Intersting question <
http://toolbar.netcraft.com/site_report?url=http://digg.com >, but I still
doubt it. What would Google gain for this acquisition? Search-wise, very
little if anything at all. A community is the only thing to be won, much as
in the Yahoo-Flickr or Yahoo-Geocities takeovers.
Google could just rely on AdSense profits in by proxy, without ownership. No
doubt, however, the Digg community is rather fond of Google, Open Source,
and that Web 2.0 hype. It seems rather apathetic towards .NET, Vista, Yahoo,
Amazon and so forth. In a sense, if not in practice, Digg must have
attracted the Slashdot crowd. Slashdot, for a change, is not up for sale
(OSTG and http://slashdot.org/supporters.shtml ) and its editors/moderators
tend to deter involvement and encourage immaturities.
At least one Google Manager has grown up in Slashdot. Others were probably
nurtured within that community, so a Google community would be an intersting
step. Do they already have a developers network like Yahoo or MSDN? I
suppose that none of Google Groups would count...
Best wishes,
Roy
