On Gentoo, xmms will soon not be available at all. Here's why:
emerge -av xmms
These are the packages that would be merged, in order:
Calculating dependencies
!!! All ebuilds that could satisfy "xmms" have been masked.
!!! One of the following masked packages is required to complete
your request:
- media-sound/xmms-1.2.10-r16 (masked by: package.mask, ~x86 keyword)
# Diego Pettenò <flameeyes@xxxxxxxxxx> (23 Oct 2006)
# Pending removal 23 November for multiple bugs
# Use anything but this, like media-sound/audacious
# media-sound/amarok media-sound/mpd media-sound/rhythmbox
# media-sound/muine media-sound/banshee
It's a shame as I was quite fond of xmms. I'm more than happy with
amarok these days though.

Security is one of those funny things. You can talk about being "more"
secure, but there's no such thing. A vulnerability is a vulnerability, and
even one makes you just as insecure as anyone else. Security is a binary
condition, either you are or you aren't. - Funkenbusch 1 Oct 2006
