I /think/ that among the average family there's this consensus that getting
an all-in-one solution, namely a PC (OpenOffice, Firefox and all those
basics) _and_ games for the kids, is a good route to take. It's affordable.
You needn't even be a Linux enthusiast as a parents. It's a simple-to-use
appliance in the living room.
Homebrew is not an advantage only for the odd hobbyist. The average customer
will not mind. _However_, it does give a boost to the platform. There's a
wealth of applications and more rapid testing. Take a look at all the
freeware Palm applications that are out there... Nokia tries the same thing
with Maemo.
