Cern had one of the best Gophers on the net, all those years ago, just
before Tim Berners-Lee came up with the web. As Cern's key personnel
are physicists, I cannot imagine them not comprehending open-source, as
it essentially follows scientific method in its development model.
Also, as scientists are always short of investment cash, then reducing
spend in this way would make sense.
