I have a little theory. There are less transparent reasons for trolling. Take
Gary for example. He knows how to do his laundry. He can write a paragraph
or two (in fact, everything he says is a separate paragraph, much like the
BBC). Anyway, he comes to COLA and participates in a discussion, using
inflammatory remarks to provoke and receive answers. He thinks that by being
part of the discussuion and blending in, it makes his seem knopledgeable, as
though it puts his at the same class as the regulars. To outsiders, this
gives the desired false impression. Essentially, think of the trolls as
posers who are better off ignored. They know they don't belong in a Linux
advocacy discussion, so they resort to annoying others and generate
followups. Can you imagine Gary having a discussion about merits and
technicalities? He'd be lost and be told "STFU n00b", or get no replies at
all. Of course, in reality the motive might also be that paycheck he gets
from his employer at Redmondville.
