This is the comp.os.LINUX.ADVOCACY group.

If I go to the comp.os.Windows.Advocacy group and post complaints about
Windows, and describe how and why Linux is better than Windows, I get
some nasty replies, which is only fair. I'm obviously there to try and
proslytize some Windows users into trying Linux. I haven't really
done much of that since Windows 2000 because so many of the issues that
were blaringly obvious that made Linux easily superior to Windows NT
4.x were fixed in Windows 2000 (except for security, DLL hell, and
torpedos).

I like Linux, I even prefer using Linux over Windows. Even when I'm
using Windows XP, I will use cygwin to give me most of the
capabilities of Linux without the hassles of reboots, switching to
virtual machines, or remote accessing into a second computer.

We frequently referr to these critical postings, which usually include
references to unsupported hardware, used on unspecified versions of
Linux, as "flatfish" postings, but they are really only "flatfish
style" postings. The genuine flatfish postings are usually quite
specific, because flatfish is very familiar with different versions of
Linux and has been able to install it and use it successfully in
several distributions and several versions.

In many ways, Flatfish is a Linux advocate. By pointing out which
hardware does NOT support Linux, the economic pressure is raised.
Linux users, and would-be Linux users, including large corporate
customers who buy thousands of computers at a time, are alerted - these
are devices to avoid at all costs. When Dell or Gateway offers a
computer that is "Linux hostile" and finds that another vendor has won
the sales using Linux friendly hardware, it's a wake-up call of the
worst kind.

Last two quarters, HP has gained market share, biting deeply into
revenues of Dell, Gateway, and even Lennovo, with their AMD-64 based
"Sold with Windows, Ready for Linux" machines, most of which can be
convertetd to Linux in less that 20 minutes using a SUSE Linux DVD
installation .

These days, with GoogleGroups, outlook, and thunderbird, it's
rediculously easy to get to newsgroups. And Outlook is notorious for
permitting 'spoofing' and 'nymshifting'.

That's part of the problem. There are so many anonymous wintrolls who
post to this group, providing absolutely no information about
themselves, their qualifications, or even their experience with Linux
and Windows.

A few have eventually shared enough about themselves to become "human"
and at that point it's easier to have some compassion for them. It's
easier to appreciate their motives and their concerns.

Even you gary, have shared enough for me to respect you and appreciate
your motives and concerns.
