It has been broken all along. That why it needs so much software to protect
it, as well as an onslaught on critical updates.

I'd advise you to edit important documents on a system you can trust; not a
system that will corrupt itself when you open the wrong document.
If Windows claims that chkdsk is missing, have you checked to verify (e.g.
from DOS or Linux) that the file exists? If not, try creating a dummy file
called chkdsk.exe and maybe it'll shut Windows up. Apparently, Windows
wishes to check a disk that was supposedly corrupted. It perceived Linux
vicinity as malovalent.
