This was mentioned before.

The Secret Failures of Microsoft

,----[ Quote ]
| Microsoft's decade of investments in WinCE and Windows Mobile
| Smartphones have only barely matched the market share of Palm, which
| itself is a run down company out of ideas. Microsoft couldn't
| out-maneuver the incompetent Palm within a decade of trying; now both
| are ineffectually fighting over the dying PDA industry while Linux and
| Symbian slaughter them in the smartphone arena:
|
| Symbian 75%; Linux 14%; Microsoft 5%; Palm 5%.

Just last week:

Dell stops selling Axim handheld

| Dell has stopped selling its Axim line of handhelds and is not planning

More stats:

70 percent of smartphones use Symbian

,----[ Quote ]
| At 3GSM it became clear that 70 percent of all smartphones use Symbian.
|
| Linux accounts for 16.9 percent of the smartphone market and only
| 4.6 percent uses Microsoft Windows Mobile.

For the record, many independent analysts say that Linux will inherit
Symbian's space. Nokia's Linux Foundation affliation membership (a fortnight
ago) and Maemo illutrate this even better than studies. Motorola is already
deep in Linux and is barely goes in any other direction.

Linux expected to be leading Smartphone OS market by 2010

| I just came across this research by Diffusion Group, which found

Don't forget Zune. They are all raking huge losses.

Origami:

Whatever Happened To The Origami?

,----[ Quote ]
| Ultimately Origami is a classic example of how a viral buzz can
| work against a product release. Expectations were too high and the
| final product was puzzling and didn't fulfill any specific consumer
| demand. By the time the systems were actually released the hype had
| died down and there was practically zero consumer awareness. I've
| actually considered the possibility that the viral Origami campaign
| was a warm-up for the Zune campaign that followed later in the summer.

Zune:

Intel chief sings iPhone's praises

,----[ Quote ]
| Apple's iPhone is forcing a new wave of mobile device innovation
| and validates the superiority of Unix-like systems on mobile devices
| over Windows, claimed Intel chief executive Paul Otellini.

Microsoft says Zune executive will leave company

,----[ Quote ]
| Bryan Lee, corporate vice president at Microsoft's entertainment
| and devices division, also played a key role in shaping the Xbox
| game console business and the introduction of its Internet
| Protocol television software.

XBox:

Loot: Redmond, We Have a Problem, Or, What's Wrong With the Xbox 360

,----[ Quote ]
| At this point, Former becomes impassioned. That's not fair, he says;
| we always saw this as a long-term venture. To which we reply that we
| were talking about the original Xbox, and while other divisions of
| the company throw off more profits in a single quarter than the
| entire $5 billion or so lost in the home and entertainment division
| ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
| to date, the fact remains that, as we take-our-word-for-it predicted,
| the Xbox group has been spectacularly unprofitable for Microsoft.
| Hence, our heretofore unpublished Vietnam analogy. The rest of the
| night is a blur, but we digress.

Review of Windows Mobile 6.0 for PPC (Crossbow) operating system

,----[ Quote ]
| Regrettably, this world lacks miracles and this case is just another
| proof of that. The system still doesn?t offer support for several
| active windows in Internet Explorer, so that you are limited to a
| single window at a time, also profiles are missing in WM; the office
| applications haven?t been enhanced either. Nor were the multimedia
| tools. What the company has really got to do is keep on tuning
| Office Mobile, extending Windows Live, release Windows Media Mobile
| 11 and so on.

Mobile phone security to outpace that on PCs [because Windows isn't there]

,----[ Quote ]
| ...it predicts the biggest mobile security market sector will be in
| the secure mobile content sector (anti-virus, anti-spam, anti-spyware

| security threat doesn't just cover mobile viruses and malware but of
| identity theft, too.

Smartphones get a firewall

,----[ Quote ]
| V3 will only run on the latest Windows Mobile 5 and Symbian 9.1
| systems though, the rationale being that as the market grows so
| fast, they will be the bulk of malware-targeted systems very soon.

|
| The Windows release is out now and the Symbian one will follow early in
| 2007. The software costs $35 (£20), which includes a year's updates and
| service.
