[News] Intel Hates $100 Linux Laptops, Spreads FUD; AMD Doing Better

Does Intel fear $100 laptops?

,----[ Quote ]
| The briefing also underscored that this is likely to be one cool computer.
| The machine, which OLPC aims ultimately to price at $100, is called the XO.
|
| [...]
|
| But there's no question that Intel hates the XO, primarily, it
| seems, because it is powered by a low-end microprocessor from AMD.
| Negroponte says "we can't compete" with an offer like Intel's,
| although OLPC hasn't lost any countries yet. OLPC aims for huge
| purchase agreements lest its marketing costs skyrocket and with
| that the price of the XO.

The more expensive OLPC with Windows support is most likely designated for US
schools, which help the project as a whole (lower production costs). Other
countries have already chosen XO (Fedora).

At Davos: citizenship, apostasy and $100 laptops

,----[ Quote ]
| Nicholas Negroponte, longtime director of MIT's Media Lab, was toting
| around a working version of his so-called "$100 laptop" (which will
| initially cost about $150). Everyone from Michael Dell to Google's
| Vint Cerf was seen playing with it. The little green-and-white computer
| is so sexy that many pronounced it "cooler than the iPhone."
|
| [...]
|
| The featured speaker at the digital divide session was Intel
| Chairman Craig Barrett, who has been outspokenly critical of
| Negroponte's laptop, in part because it is based on a processor
| chip from arch-rival AMD. Intel at Davos was trying to
| strike back by showing its own green-and-white "Classmate PC,"
| which is considerably more expensive and whose clunkiness prompted
| no iPhone comparisons.
|
| Barrett and Negroponte traded barbs in which each accused the other
| of caring more about marketing than children. Then AMD President
| Andre Richard made a proposal - despite their rivalry on other
| matters, the two chipmakers should cooperate on special software
| for inexpensive educational computers.

| is concerned about incurring Microsoft's wrath, the executive said.
| The two companies have a long history of tension over who controls
| the hardware and software direction of the "Wintel standard." Intel
| has said it is supporting both operating systems.

Google did not boot AMD for Intel

,----[ Quote ]
| Google's displeasure with Intel's blog gossip making its way to the
| press is evident in the company's terse statement. Such PR rumblings
| between the two companies are sure to make things uncomfortable next
| time Intel CEO Paul Otellini shows up for a Google board meeting.

Intel: Only "Open" for Business

,----[ Quote ]
| These vendors often want a quiet private discussion, because in a
| quiet private discussion they can continue to dismiss the requests and in
| the end do absolutely nothing. They do not want a noisy public
| discussion, because then they look bad. But they DESERVE TO LOOK BAD,
| because they are being bad to those who bought their hardware!
|
| [...]
|
| By withholding, Intel is being an Open Source fraud.
|
| [...]
|
| So let's win back the rights to run the hardware we purchased.
|
| Please feel free to let other open source communities know about this
| matter. Thank you.
