Smolt statistics, Fedora 8 Feature List

| But about the positive stuff: of course for me most interesting is the
| inclusion of KDE 4 packages. If it works out Fedora 8 might be the first,
| larger distribution using KDE 4!

KDE 4 Snapshot 04-18-07 Screenshot Tour

| Unlike the SLAX-based live CD called KLAX, which he used to develop in
| order to demonstrate new KDE releases, his "KDE Four Live" images

| An openSuse based Live DVD with an up-to-date snapshot of KDE 4
| development packages is available. With a virtual machine this
| makes it easy to have a look at the upcoming KDE 4.

Tracker: A Meta Search Tool for Linux

,----[ Quote ]
| The Tracker Search Tool (known officially as MetaTracker), is a meta search
| application written for the Gnome desktop, although it will, with the correct
| libraries run on both the xfce and KDE desktops as well. In the past, I've
| reviewed the Beagle desktop search tool as well as the new Google Desktop
| search for Linux. Why another search tool? Two reasons. First is because of
| the three, I like Tracker the best. Second is because I feel Tracker often
| gets ignored among Linux users. Beagle is often the defaul search tool for
| Linux distributions (even though, in my opinion, it still has far too much
| going against it - speed in particular - to warrant the inclusion), and
| Google Desktop Search is... well, it's a Google product, and therefore
| probably gets too MUCH attention, even though it is a very good product.

Google Desktop for Linux

,----[ Quote ]
| Linux is all about choice and its nice to see programs coming from all areas.
| Google Desktop for Linux does work well and offers features that worked well
| and unobtrusively. I prefered Google Desktop over Beagle because of Google
| Desktop's ability to index Gmail and the fact that it’s not dependant on the
| dog slow Mono library. Well done G people.

Desktop search tools for GNU/Linux: the competition hots up (part one)

,----[ Quote ]
| GNU/Linux is about choice and therefore freedom and therefore power
| and when it comes to desktop search tools the same mantra applies.
| If some efforts have fallen by the wayside the GNU/Linux community
| possesses sufficient imagination and talent in depth to come up
| with alternatives and I want to look at three Beagle rivals and
| compare them to that established search tool.

,----[ Quote ]
| Desktop search engines are all the rage these days. While Beagle may
| be the most popular desktop search engine for Linux, there are
| alternatives. If you are looking for a lightweight and easy-to-use
| yet powerful desktop search engine, you might want to try Recoll.
| Unlike Beagle, Recoll doesn't require Mono, it's fast, and it's
| highly configurable. Recoll is based on Xapian, a mature open source
| search engine library that supports advanced features such as phrase
| and proximity search, relevance feedback, document categorization,
| boolean queries, and wildcard search.

Unifying Desktop Search

,----[ Quote ]
| Wasabi is a new proposal on FreeDesktop.org for a unified desktop
| search and metadata specification.
|
| [...]
|
| If they can get either KDE or GNOME to support it then the
| chances will be good. In fact, KDE has been focusing on various
| API's for the upcoming KDE4 release so it should be right up their
| alley. After all, Phonon is doing the exact same thing for
| multimedia backends.

Desktop search for Linux

,----[ Quote ]
| I already wrote a bit about desktop search on Linux systems, you can
| find more in the section Desktop Search (surprise, surprise).
|
| However, the last look at the situation in general is quite some months
| ago, and several things have developed since then.
