Here are some notes from the finanical meeting.

Microsoft: Still A Growth Stock, But Many Are Skeptical

,----[ Quote ]
| But the Street is worried that Microsoft's aggressive push into online
| advertising and consumer devices may not bear fruit - or if nothing else,
| could water down the company’s vaunted margins.

| Also on Monday, the New York Times has a long story on the slow transition
| Bill Gates is making away from an operating role at the company; this story
| highlights the roles played by both Mundie and by Chief Software Architect
| Ray Ozzie.

Microsoft Investment Needs Too Much Patience - Barron's

,----[ Quote ]
| Some of the issues that worry analysts: 1) It was clear from the presentation
| that many of the growth prospects will take 5-10 years to bear fruit. 2) The
| company overspends ("nothing would delight analysts more than a nice big
| round of cost-cutting.") 3) The businesses MSFT says it's entering (e.g.
| advertising and consumer electronics) are far more cut-throat than its
| current mix. 4) Microsoft's focus on building internet infrastructure rather
| than building sites that bring in users is "backward." 5) Bill Gates's plan
| to pass control of product development to Ray Ozzie "will not be a smooth
| one." Bullish analysts say the company has gained operational clarity.
| Perhaps, Barron's Eric Savitz says, but investors won't likely have the
| patience to wait around.

Several months ago people said that Ballmer et al are pressuring the stock too
much (they also pressure the userbase now because they crack down on piracy,
which means they lose customers and raise revenue in the _short term_). It's
the lockin-squeeze game now. ODF is important here. XAML/XPS/HD/MSDRM are
among the ansties (a a new wave of lockins).
