The money they extract goes to the middleman (themselves) anyway, so all they
do is lead to resentment, which hurts of artists. The RIAA is *not* caught in
the middle; it does the damage (like a broken phone or noisy line) in the
middle. Thus, it is unwanted. Artists have begun going independent owing to
the Internet. There are various examples.
If you buy a CD for $20, it is likely that $4 is taxable, another $6 goes to
the record shop and then, officer in the 99th floor spilt the rest with the
actual artist, who will be lucky to receive $5 from the $20 giveaway from a
loyal fan. Call it hierarchy, economics, or whatever. It seems redundant and
it's as repelling as pyramid schemes.
