Norway and OOXML

,----[ Quote ]
| IDG.se reports that a template letter was sent by Microsoft in Norway for
| partners to send to the technical committee there. And in fact 37 identical
| letters were sent, but as it turned out, many of the companies just sent in
| the letter without even signing it. Over half of all the comments received
| were in the pro-Microsoft pile.

Similar to the kickbacks in Sweden.

,----[ Quote ]
| Microsoft Corp. admitted Wednesday that an employee at its Swedish subsidiary
| offered monetary compensation to partners for voting in favor of the Office
| Open XML document format's approval as an ISO standard.

OOXML News From Denmark

,----[ Quote ]
| It appears that pressure was put on partners there as well, although
| Microsoft denies that was the intent.

INCITS confirms: US to vote for Open XML in ISO

INCITS said "No". Then, Steve Ballmer and Bill Gates started making phonecalls
to politicians.

Microsoft's OOXML provokes standards turmoil in France

,----[ Quote ]
| Microsoft, notably, disagreed with this consensus, and sought for the French
| vote to ISO to be an abstention.

It was a brawl, according to Hiser. Same old tricks. Panel stacking and
partners. Now in English:

Hungarian Standards Institution to reconsider its vote!

Again, politicians get involved and Microsoft partners want to storm the
panels.

Microsoft takes off gloves in open documents battle

,----[ Qoute ]
| Microsoft’s fight to get file formats for its Word, Access, Excel and
| Powerpoint products accepted by the ISO standards organisation is getting
| nasty.

Open XML standard war grows heated

| Similar Microsoft vote-stuffing activities have also been reported in Denmark
| and Norway.
|
| [...]
|
| Some countries, such as Brazil, China, India and Canada, have already
| announced that they have voted against Open XML. The final result on whether
| Open XML will make the grade as an ISO standard will be announced on Sept. 2.

Microsoft's Failures with the OOXML Standard

,----[ Quote ]
| The sad part is that even if the ISO vote actually goes in Microsoft’s
| favour, it still won’t matter. It buys them a few years of market ignorance
| at best. This entire two year event is one for the standards text books on
| how not to respond to a business threatening standard. In the end, Microsoft
| will need to implement ODF natively. They don’t know it yet, nor do they
| understand why, but it is just a matter of time.
