The LF has begun doing something like this to measure growth. While it cannot
give accurate number, it was pretty much able to show that Linux usage on the
desktop doubled in the past year. This result aligns nicely with one or two
other (independent) surveys that were conducted in the past few months.
Sooner or later we might find that the world is not flat and that the sun does
not revolve around us.
Don't forget that many Linux devices access the Internet. Their user might not
even know that they use Linux, but that's where we're heading in the
not-so-distant future.
