Personally, I'm not sure what to make of this, since the
real intent, if it makes any sense to implement this at
all, should be to protect the *content* not the *format*.

In short, Metallica's works (just to pick an artist
at random) should not be copyable/convertable without
authorization regardless of whether we're talking AVI, MP3,
OGG, WMA, etc. At least, if one wants to ensure ownership
each and every byte on the Web, anyway. (Not horribly
likely at this point!)

Of course it gets real wacky if one goes into MIDI
transcriptions, various audio distortions (playing
sounds speeded up, slowed down, backwards, etc.),
digital-audio-redigital, and lyrics.

Prince in particular is suing YouTube, eBay, and BitTorrent
for music piracy, and various fans for portraying online
images of the star.

Can't be too careful, I guess.

Imagine the copyright consequences, if the powers-that-be dislike
the notion. This could get slightly messy, but hopefully
reason will prevail.

Oh, why would one want to? :-) Apart from the fact that they
assume everyone's guilty, increase the complexity of the product,
and slow things down more than a slug in molasses?
