FOSS folk who make us proud

| Five days ago, three members of the free and open source software community
| finally heaved a sigh of relief and wiped the sweat from their brows after
| winning a battle they had waged for years.

Running With a Revamped, Refreshed Red Hat

,----[ Quote ]
| There's lots of holiday cheer to go around in North Carolina this season.
| Linux leader Red Hat (NYSE: RHT) reported a very strong third quarter, with
| 28% higher sales than in the year-ago period, 24% stronger operating cash
| flow, and 39% fatter net income. Investors liked what they saw, giving the
| share price a 12% boost on Friday on very heavy volume.

Everyone seems happy except for Novell, Linspire and others who are stuck in a
miserable (and unnecessary) patent+OOXML deal. How foolish.

New Red Hat CEO checks open source claims

,----[ Quote ]
| The news that the operations chief from a major US airline, Jim Whitehurst
| from Delta, is taking over at Red Hat from Matthew Szulik is a further sign
| of the growing legitimization of open source and Linux in the eyes of
| corporate, mainstream America. It underscores how the “suits to sandals”
| ratio in the open source and Linux movement sliding further towards the
| suits.
|
| Whitehurst’s blue-chip background at the $16-billion-a-year Delta and the
| fact he’s an executive lured from outside of the IT industry rather than one
| who simply swapped one tech industry management job for another underscores
| the belief in open source as a business.
