He he, nice, I 'm sure your boss will appreciate your efforts. But Open Source it can't be stopped any longer. It's already surpassed the outdated Microsoft development model.

"During the time Vista has been delayed the Open Source community, who constantly betters their products by openly sharing their code, has gained momentum and is blowing past the Microsoft Bohemith. If Vista had been released on time there would be little reason, other than security and stability, to use anything else. However it was delayed time and again until the rest of the development world is slightly ahead technologically.

At Sweet! Computing we have used Microsoft Vista and it's a fairly decent operating system in it's own right (security issues aside). However, with it's late release Vista is not nearly as spectacular on the desktop any longer as there are more spectacular desktops already available, and for far less than the hefty price Microsoft asks for Windows Vista.

It appears the more streamlined approach of sharing code openly, where you don't have to reinvent the wheel over and over, is really paying off and has become the new, and future mainstream model for software development. After all, the code base for newer systems is huge. If you can re-use code that already has the bugs worked out you have a huge time saving advantage and greater stability. We're not sure how Microsoft is going to pull it off, but they are almost certainly going to need to adjust themselves to this approach if they even hope to remain competitive in the future.

There is no doubt that through the magic of the advertising dollar Microsoft will do well with it's new release, and we wish them well. But now that the Open Source world is beginning to dictate the pace it will be interesting to see what directions are taken in both arenas.
