I think that in order to take advantage of this full 3D, OpenGL-accelerated
environment, one would have to give up on the mouse and keyboard. When you
get something like a Wiimote or a glove, for example, the third dimension
makes a lot of sense. For modelling software like Maya the benefits can be
astounding. It's originally a UNIX application. Blender 3D and AutoCAD can
be considered as well.

Other types of applications can benefits from this as well, but the UI needs
to be changed radically and there's training (and a mental barrier)
involved. Think, for instance, about a file manager where the tree levels
are the Z-dimension while the X- and Y-dimensions are used to render the
contents. You can then easily (and quickly) grab files from one level to
another.
