You didn't read the article, did you?  Try this experiment.  Sit down 
and write a C implementation of the abs function (portability is not 
required, so you can make assumptions about things that are left up to 
the implementation in the C standard if you wish).  There is about a 
99.9% chance you won't come anywhere near anything covered by that 
patent.

It's about a very specific, very clever, way to implement abs.
