What plan?
They've had a "plan" to take over the data center for two decades.
Guess what: Microsoft failed! Linux/Unix still run the data center, and
most mission critical apps, and most large websites, and most large
databases, and most supercomputers, and most transactional processing.
They had a "plan" to take over the web.
Guess what: Microsoft failed. MSN is a disaster. At one point their fired
200 of their "content directors". They spun off MSNBC and Slate. And
Netscape, which they supposedly killed, emerged like a phoenix in the form
of Firefox and is sweeping away marketshare by the tens of percents.
What's more, Firefox strictly adheres to standards.
They had a "plan" to remake media control with DRM
Guess what: Microsoft failed. Vista is a flop -- Balmer said so himself!
And every other major player in IP selling ( Jobs, et al) has come
out /against/ DRM!
They had a "plan" to take over all data on the desktop
Guess what: Microsoft failed. After ten years of development, what did we
get: the sight of Jim Allchin whining in a memo about how his stuff stinks.
