I had to hop through two links to get to that commercial.

Remember, Windows 2000 was supposed to have improved security by
allowing the user to set up warnings when they were about to do
something really stupid, like load an ActiveX control, run a signed
Java Applet, or accept a cookie that could be read by any site that
wanted it.

Most people just got so annoyed with all of the warning pop-ups that
they finally just turned them off, leaving the door wide open,
unguarded, and the cash register drawer open and full of cash. All
the thief had to do is wait for the cashier to go to the bathroom, and
they were off the the cash in a flash.

Identity theft - $600 billion in damages.
Lost time due to viruses $600 billion.
Lost time due to corrupted computers and data $300 billion.

Microsoft revenue from Windows OS from 2000 to 2006 - $36 billion.
Microsoft revenue from Office and support contracts - $80 billion.

Losses due to corrupted Linux systems - <$10 million.
Revenue from Linux licenses and support - 2006 $200 million.
Revenue from all Linux driven sources - 2006 - $32 billion.

For 2006:
Copies of Firefox downloaded from monitored sources 300 million
Copies of OpenOffice downloaded from monitored sources 200 million
Copies of Linux downloaded from monitored sources 200 million
Thumbnail estimates below
Copies of Cygwin downloaded from monitored sources 100 million?
Copies of VMware player downloaded from monitored sources - 100
million?
Number of Linux/Windows virtualization technologies available - 20.
   Includes emulation or campatibility libraries.

People aren't quite willing to give up Windows XP completely, but it's
pretty clear that a substantial market exists for those who want to
run more than just Windows.

Hopefully, vendors are getting the message.
