[News] Microsoft Aiming for 'Consolation price': FLOSS on Windows

Microsoft Plays Up Open Source

,----[ Quote ]
| Recently Microsoft's open source software lab posted PostgreSQL on
| Windows: A Primer. Postgres is one of the longest running open
| source databases -- it has been around for nearly 11 years. The
| powerful object-relational database is a direct competitor to
| other OSS databases, as well as Microsoft's SQL Server 2005. So
| why is Microsoft promoting it?

They also support Python, they try to enhance PHP along with Zend, boost Xen
performance with a XenSource partnership, Ruby support, and so forth. They
are losing grip, so they try to keep programmers/systems admins (e.g. for
virtualisation) on their platform. That's partly what the Novell deal is
about (less about interoperability and mostly about patent FUD). How long
before they get together with the OpenOffice team just as they got involved
with Mozilla programmers, who sometimes seem to neglect some other platforms
(according to O'Reilly Radar). They buy an advantage rather than earn it.
