[News] CDs Don't Work in Vista, Work Fine in Linux

Vista DRM Bites CD Audiophiles

,----[ Quote ]
| It would appear that Vista's DRM protection is for more than just
| "premium content" - even DRM protected "CD's" apparently won't
| play through S/PDIF (optical) outputs whereas they work just
| fine under Linux.

|
| Vista's DRM really is Defective by Design.

It's beginning to seem as though Linux beats Vista at pretty much everything
(see below). Vista is a step back compared to XP, which is excellent news to
Linux.

| Unfortunately for Microsoft and Vista, Windows Mail is in no way,

|
| In balance, though, up to this point, I still see MEPIS as being
| the software leader. Not only does it give you better programs --
| Firefox and Evolution -- it offers you more choice from the moment
| you fire it up on your PC.

A Vista vs. Linux Matchup

| Putting aside Apple hardware, where all the software works with
| all the hardware so long as it's all up to the minute, I found
| that MEPIS actually has better hardware support for this PC
| than Vista.

|
| Adding insult to injury, since DRM protection schemes must
| evolve constantly, to stay ahead of hackers tearing them down,
| I have little doubt that one day you'll come home to find that
| a Vista update to DRM-protection has just locked you out of your
| media collection. You know, the same collection, which had
| worked just fine the day before. Repeat after me: DRM does
| not belong in operating systems.

My LinuxWorld Winter Wonderland ordeal

| There are three morals to this story. The first is that Linux --
| and MEPIS in particular -- makes a great business laptop operating
| system. The second is to try to get laptops with not just good,
| but outstanding WiFi performance, and excellent battery life. And,
| last but probably the one I'll remember best, never, ever take a
| flight with a connection in Dulles in the winter.
