True. Similar accusations where made when the NSA modified Red Hat Linux to
get a more secure variant (in fact, SUSE and Apple's Mac OS has the NSA
involved as well). Then, you also had people who said that the Chinese
government, for example, could plant things in the kernel. The source code,
however, leaves little or no room for skepticism. Humanity, quite
unfortunately, seems to be headed in the opposite (non humanitarian and
non-democratic) direction. DRM, for example, takes us aback. Then you hear
about voting machines (ballot) whose protocols (source code?) is kept
secret. Even a judge forbade the Democrats access to the code, for viewing
only. Amazing, ain't it?
