Have you heard about the new image format yet? Imagine being sent an HD file
from a Windows Vista user who innocently saved his photos in the default
format. The forced upgrade will make use of a viral sort of 'network
effect'. It's also Microsoft's way of cashing in over and over again for the
same piece of software (e.g. Office) that's not necessarily broken.
Comptibility and security (or lack thereof) can be powerful to a salesman
because they are breakage/expiry tools. Such malicious lockin schemes are
transcending the barriers and software and reach actuial data. Hollywood
loves the idea of DRM while Microsoft sympathesises and collaborates.

Take the control back from the vendor to the customer. Oh! And take control
of your machines, which is not only owned by the company that lends a licese
to use it, but also by a criminal.
