It isn't annonimous, He told them who he was. This man waved his hands in
the air and shaouted 'HERE I AM, I DONE IT GOVERNER', well he might as well
have done that.
He does a crap thing about 'How did my employer find out' then follows it by
a distinct lack of knowledge about networks 'Did me plugging my USB device
in get noticed?', no mate no one will have saw that, 'Then he ftp'd his
file off his company property'.
Do you know how much gets flagged in the ftp filter of my logs, have in your
mind 210 PCs on this particular site? I'll tell you, a very tiny ammount,
the few that are there are regulars that I know about, oddities stand out.
He might as well have stuck his arm up in the office and shouted to
everyone 'HEY LOOK I'M FTP'ING DATA OUT OF THE COMPANY!!!!'
So their IT staff does their daily flick through yesterdays logs, it only
takes a couple of minutes, the regular stuff isn't listed, just the
odities, oi up, they say, whats this filtered into ftptraf.log?
Well I can tell you what it is, it's the source, the destination and what
was passed, the date the time and even the file name.
So you do a quick look and in moments you have the name of the PC (ok, I
admit this bit doesn't pick up the dns, I'm not perfect). You look at the
destination, does it have a domain name, what sort of site is it, you have
the man's user name (this is ftp matey, of cause we have the user name). So
if it's a group site you can still get to his pages or profile.
This man gave them all of the information necessary to find who he was and
what he was up to.
He no doubt had signed two contracts at work either of which could see him
out of the company via the nearest winner. His general contract to do with
what he wrote in his blog and another to do with his use of company
property. He broke both.
What was his other blog site about then, let me guess, he was claiming to be
an expert on computers? Go on, am I right or what.
