Of cause these other distros will go onto server hardware, I don't think
anyone would have guessed otherwise. Chances are they would have been a bit
of driver hunting, but the key point is that you get no support.

For many of us that is fine, how often do we actually use support? Well I
would say close to never.

But there is the other side, if you use a distro that is cutting edge, then
every update is a risk. You certainly couldn't allow automatic updates of a
critical server. Actually, lets say that the majority of the time you could
do that, well lets face it not many of us bother looking at the list in the
updates box anymore do we, because it has been so smooth for so many years.
But still, would you dare take that approach on your company servers?

That's not for me, I like to sleep at night, I don't want to come in on
Friday morning to find that all of my servers have done the update, but
there was some knock on effect, my users are screaming, the directors are
screaming and these things always happen when there is no coffee left in
the cuboard and I now have a busy weekend ahead of me.

I am much happier to be a step or three behind and have updates that are
tested. I can't remember the last time a Redhat or SLES update was bad, I
would be confident enough to let them happen in normal working hours on the
live systems, but the pessimist in me is bigger than I am and he says no.
