[News] [OSS] More Open Source Worlds Are Born, Relying on Open Standards

Standards will help users keep their virtual clothes on

| "They've set a very interesting precedent," he said. Sutor expects that
| other virtual worlds will follow suit. Like the open-source movement,
| "virtual worlds are fundamentally about communities coming together," he
| added, looking forward to the establishment of a global community of
| developers focused on building worlds based on open standards.

Semantic Wonderland

,----[ Quote ]
| Among the most impressive demos at JavaOne was the open sourced
| Project Wonderland which James Gosling presented during his Toy
| show. It is a virtual world that grew out of project Looking Glass,
| the 2.5D Java Desktop that was unveiled a couple of years ago.

| Apparently one gets the best out of wonderland by running it on Linux,
| as one can then interact with real X applications.

Watch out Second Life: China launches virtual universe with seven million
souls

,----[ Quote ]
| Second Life's supporters claim it has three "killer" applications.
| First, unlike the internet, it has a system for micropayments using
| its own currency, Linden dollars, which are convertible into real
| dollars. Second, unlike other virtual worlds such as the massively
| popular World of Warcraft, it lets residents keep the intellectual
| property rights to what they create. Third, its owner, Linden Lab,
| recently welcomed the "open source" movement, allowing anyone
| qualified to create their own applications whether games,
| education or business projects.

(Review) Microsoft Launch in Second Life

,----[ Quote ]
| Overall I was extremely disappointed with the launch. Maybe as more
| clues are revealed, the pieces will fit together and reveal something
| more that I am missing at this time, but as it stands now it appears
| that this is just the latest of many attempts by Microsoft to throw
| money away on an ineffective project to raise public interest. This
| project fails on several levels. As it stands now, the island in
| terms of rich content is completely undeveloped. There is no real
| attempt at integrating the Microsoft brand. There is nothing to
| offer the residents of Second Life. There is nothing for them to
| do, experience, or take with them other than an entirely too
| difficult challenge. I certainly see no reason for me or anyone
| else to visit the island more than once, and I wouldn?t put it
| on a list of places you have to see even once.
