[News] Science Reaches New Generation of Collaboration and Openness (like Linux)

The New Science of Sharing

,----[ Quote ]
| The Novartis collaboration is just one example of a deep transformation in
| science and invention. Just as the Enlightenment ushered in a new
| organizational model of knowledge creation, the same technological and
| demographic forces that are turning the Web into a massive collaborative
| work space are helping to transform the realm of science into an
| increasingly open and collaborative endeavor. Yes, the Web was, in fact,
| invented as a way for scientists to share information. But advances in
| storage, bandwidth, software, and computing power are pushing collaboration
| to the next level. Call it Science 2.0.

And DRM and patents are exactly the opposite. It is about stopping sharing of
information and not preserving knowledge, either. It's a tool for dumbing
down of consumers and stfiling of scientific progress. It's good for
monopolies.

Open Source Research -- the Power of Us

,----[ Quote ]
| Open source methods have delivered tangible benefits in the computer
| science community. We describe here efforts to extend these principles
| to science generally, and in particular biomedical research. Open
| source research holds great promise for solving complex problems in
| areas where profit-driven research is seen to have failed. We
| illustrate this with a specific problem in organic chemistry that
| we think will be solved substantially faster with an open
| source approach.
