There's a true dilemma which Gates must face. On the one hand, if he leaves,
his employees will be demoralised. They will then realise that the pinnacle
is already behind. If he stays, on the other hand, not only must he cope
with the frustration of witnessing implosion, but he will also be remembered
as one who rose _and_ fell. By leaving (and selling $3+ billion worth of
MSFT stock) he is able to blame his successors, simultaneously doing what he
can in politics, the press, and investments (he calls it "philanthropy"). At
the same time, rest assure he is trying to rewrite history by donating to
libraries and getting a Museum of Computing off the ground (with a slanted
perspective, of course). All the evidence, a fraction of which came from the
Comes vs. Microsoft trial, will be there to remind people how a suppressive
empire rose sustained itself, using aggression and fraud. Intel is beginning
to paint a similar picture, but there's more to be seen. But the danger of
having no contest (AMD) is definitely off topic.
