How can anyone be an 'alpha geek' if they are doin windummy development?
There is no merit to working in a bug ridden closed source environment
when you could say work on Beryl and cutting edge 3D graphics develping
things faster by delving directly into source code
and producing results that others will want to use immediately!

There is definitely no pride in getting something micoshaft working.
All you are doing is being a sucker
donating your time and money free of charge
to fix micoshaft's broken products which should
have arrived without these problems.
Whereas with open source, you are sharing with others and get fixes
free to the fixes you added in source code. Plus source code to
integrate with other projects without any worries about taking
copies, distributing freely and licensing.
And if you do these things well, you may even get picked up
with job offers and/or people buy things off of you like support.
