Of course I assume that figure is an average of various Linux
disciplines; some will make more or less than others. Kernel and
driver developers, for example, seem to be commanding a premium
right now (up to twice what the above quote mentions). There are
a lot of new Linux based products in the pipeline right now, which
seems to have really driven up demand for those skills.
In related news... I've taken my first non-telecommuting contract
in some time, working on Linux based satellite telecom hardware.
I'll be living out of a suitcase for a while on this one, but the
money is good and the tech sounds fun. The GF and I will have to
do the long distance relationship for a few months, but the extra
cash means come spring we can take a big vacation and then really
dedicate ourselves to renovating the warehouse/loft.
If the job market is any indication where the future of tech is
going, Linux is definitely a good bet.
