You can only post so many messages that say 'Linux is great' before it
starts to get dull.
For discussion and argument to take place you need to bring in alternative
points of view so that you have something to argue about.
Odd though, that the Windows advocates use the burried head in the sand bit
towards Linux advocates, it's been said so many times. But from our point
of view it isn't us that have our heads in the sand, we can see very
clearly, it is the Windows folk who can't see, you accept what MS gives you
without question, you even pay for them to supply you with what ever they
decide you should have. You are happy to sit there at a Vista machine and
not be able to do anything other than the basics, because MS haven't
finished it yet. You sit there at your XP, despite knowing that every time
you buy online you risk being the subject of fraud, that an accidental
click on a bad web site will have you in trouble.
Why are MS folk so willing to look like fools?
I sit at my Linux machines knowing that I can go on any web site I fancy
with no risk. If I stray to a bad site I'm not at risk. I can open my
emails and it dosen't matter at all if a bad email gets through
spamassassin and I open it before I notice it was an email I shouldn't have
opened if I was sat at a Windows machine. I am safe, I have the freedom to
use the Internet in any way I choose, without any risk to myself or my
personal details.
At least, no local risk. I have no control of the data about me that is held
on all of the unsafe servers and PCs out there. MS servers are much better
than they once were, but each time an MS client accesses any data
concerning me, I am put at risk. It feels like living on the 15th floor of
a block of flats, you are dependant on everyone below you, you have to hope
that none of them will leave a chip pan on the gas and go out, that none of
them will fall asleep with a cigar in their hands.
That is what MS is like to us in Linux, we are dependant on it through no
fault of our own, yet we know how weak it actually is, it isn't easy to
sleep knowing that MS owns floors 1-14.
