Finding the ideal Linux distribution can often be more difficult than you would imagine.
A while back I decided to install as gentoo, mainly as a way to learn a great deal about linux. The problem is that I have now invested so much time and effort in gentoo I would be very reluctant to leave it, even though all the compiling everything from source does get on my nerves somewhat.
Arch Linux is a really nice (mainly binary) distro that I am revisiting. What I didn't appreciate at the time, but have just accross is 'The Arch Build System' which allows you to build from source if you find that you need to, & it also handles all the dependecies (rather like portage in gentoo). So it seems to be the best of both worlds.
My only disappointment has been k3b, which for 'me' has gone from brilliant --> awfull --> unusable, in that is crashing & banging now, but wasn't originally (and yes I have posted bugs).
This seems to be a problem that I will have to slove using the cli.
For me things are still in a state of flux, but the good news is that I have managed to narrow things down.
