[News] Linux-based EeePC 900 Reviewed by the Microsoft-affiliated CNET

ASUS EeePC 900

,----[ Quote ]
| Those who opt for the Linux version of the Eee PC 900 won't be disappointed.
| It uses the same Linux-based OS as the EeePC 701, and comes with some 40
| applications pre-installed. You can add your own applications as you might
| expect, but we found pretty much everything we needed was already on the
| system, including the OpenOffice productivity suite, Firefox browser, a media
| player and more. Applications are logically arranged in tab groups
| labeled "Internet", "work", "learn", "play", "settings" and "favourites", so
| everything is easy to find.

First look at ASUS Eee PC 900

,----[ Quote ]
| I've found the look and feel of the default desktop, with its
| easy-to-navigate tabbed interface (powered by IceWM), very usable and up
| until now I haven't felt a very strong urge to hack it into something more
| Linux-like or to replace it with a different distribution. But I know that
| it's just a matter of time before I start tinkering (I've already looked
| through EeeUser.com Wiki pages for some information about tweaking the
| desktop into something more powerful). Once that happens, I'll duly report
| about it here, but in the meantime, I am quite happy to stay with whatever
| the new Eee PC came with.
|
| For the next few weeks I am planning to dig deeper into the Eee PC 900,
| focusing first on tweaking Xandros Desktop into a more powerful system and
| later trying out different distributions that are known to work on the
| laptop. Mandriva Linux 2008.1 is reportedly designed to work on the machine
| out of the box, while many other projects, such as eeeDora, eeeXubuntu,
| PuppEee, Debian EeeOS and others exist in order to develop custom solutions
| for the laptop.

Linux is Part of Asus’s Long Term Plan

,----[ Quote ]
| Asus announced three new Linux products.
|
| I would even go so far to say that if Asus keeps up its support of Linux, it
| may be the company that is credited with bringing Linux on the desktop to the
| masses.

ASUS Eee Linux PC dumps on Windows

,----[ Quote ]
| Nicely, there’s a VMWare image too. This means you can emulate the Eee within
| a VMWare virtual machine. You can do this on a Linux host or even a Windows
| one, too, if you wish. Or any other platform where VMWare is available. So,
| that’s right, you can run the ASUS Eee Linux PC image dump on Windows.
