Torvalds to kernel hopefuls: Think 'trivial'
,----[ Quote ]
| Mark Taylor, president of the Open Source Consortium, told ZDNet.co.uk on
| Friday that, in general, enterprise-class open-source projects are designed
| to scale appropriately.
|
| "The whole process scales very well," said Taylor. "Normally the people you
| find at the core (of open-source projects) are professional software
| engineers; these guys know how to run software projects."
|
| Torvalds' and Taylor's comments follow the recent publication of a guide to
| Linux kernel development by the Linux Foundation, which aims to prevent
| developers becoming frustrated with the process.

64-bit Application Thread Creation Performance
,----[ Quote ]
| A recent discussion on the Linux Kernel mailing list noted that threaded
| 64-bit applications suffer a drastic slowdown in pthread_create performance
| when stack utilization goes above 4GB. Ingo Molnar offered an explanation of
| the problem, "unfortunately MAP_32BIT use in 64-bit apps for stacks was
| apparently created without foresight about what would happen in the MM when
| thread stacks exhaust 4GB. The problem is that MAP_32BIT is used both as a
| performance hack for 64-bit apps and as an ABI compat mechanism for 32-bit
| apps. So we cannot just start disregarding MAP_32BIT in the kernel - we'd
| break 32-bit compat apps and/or compat 32-bit libraries." The original report
| noted that once the shared stack goes above 4GB in size, thread creation can
| take as long as 10 milliseconds, a slowdown described as "quite
| unacceptable".

Windows development is chaos at the moment. Key programmers left, the
management is shuffled endlessly, "development collapse" and "reboot" are
reported, and 7 can't get off the ground (it'll be VistaII). Details below.

Microsoft's Vista Blogger Quits As Redmond Exodus Builds

| White did not provide a reason for his decision. To be sure, his position
| could not have been an easy one. White's posts often elicited hundreds of

|
| His departure also raises questions about Microsoft's ability to retain

| Earlier this year, Microsoft Business Division president Jeff Raikes said he
| would retire in September, to be replaced by former Juniper Networks chief
| operating officer Stephen Elop.
|
| Microsoft's merger and acquisitions chief Bruce Jaffe stepped down at the end
| of February.
|
| To boot, Microsoft chairman Bill Gates will give up full-time duties at the
| company in July.
|
| The departures highlight one of Microsoft's biggest challenges as a mature
| company: attracting and retaining Silicon Valley's top talent. In its early
| days, Microsoft could entice recruits with an entrepreneurial environment and
| stock options that eventually turned secretaries into millionaires.

Vista marketing chief to bid Microsoft adieu
,----[ Quote ]
| Michael Sievert, Corporate Vice President for Windows Product Marketing, is
| moving on, according to multiple sources of mine.
|
| It’s hard to make the case that Sievert, who was responsible for the
| worldwide introduction of Windows Vista, isn’t being pushed for the
| less-than-enthusiastic public perception of Microsoft’s latest version of
| Windows. Even though Microsoft has moved 100-million-plus copies of Vista,
| many consumers and businesses still consider the new release buggy, sluggish
| and incompatible with existing software and drivers.
