[News] [SOT] Mirosoft's Friend Elsevier is a 'Pirate', Just Like Microsoft

Elsevier steals, then copyrights other people's free stuff

,----[ Quote ]
| Reed Elsevier caught copying my content without my permission:
| I was not asked for, and did not give, permission for my work to appear
| on that page, much less in that format. Needless to say, I felt a little
| slighted.
| The website in question appears to be a custom version of the LexisNexis
| search engine. This particular version appears to be Elsevier's own
| custom version, intended for internal use. I don't have conclusive proof
| of that, but the title bar at the top of the page reads, "Elsevier
| Corporate", and the person who accessed my blog from that page had an IP
| address that's registered to MD Consult, which is an Elsevier subsidiary.
| My guess is that Elsevier's keeping track of news articles and blog posts
| that mention them, along with the context in which they're mentioned.

| Reed Elsevier Is Stealing My Words:
| I received an email from ScienceBlogling Mike Dunford that Reed Elsevier
| had excerpted one of my posts. No problem there--I like it when people
| read my stuff....except for one thing:
| The fuckers copyrighted my words.
| Copyright violation?:
| Apparently, publishing companies don't always get permission for the
| materials they use, either. Mike Dunford caught Reed Elsevier copying his
| content without permission (from Stephen Downes).

The Pirate Bay Blocked in Italy

,----[ Quote ]
| The Pirate Bay has been “censored” in Italy following an urgent decree from a
| deputy public prosecutor. Pirate Bay’s IPs and the domain name are
| inaccessible, as they are blocked by ISPs all over the country. Whether these
| blocks will be very effective, however, is doubtful, since The Pirate Bay has
| already announced several countermeasures.

RMS: «Italy's major ISPs have blocked access to the Pirate Bay, a major
bittorrent site.

While I appreciate the sassy attitude of calling this activity "Pirate", it is
better to reject and denounce the practice of using that smear term to refer
to sharing.»

Microsoft in Flickr rights shockr

,----[ Quote ]
| Microsoft has always been rather strident on the topic of copyright
| infringement, as you may have noticed, which makes tale of its "Iconic
| Britain" photo contest all the more astonishing.
| The competition was designed as part of the marketing campaign around Windows
| Live Image Search, with Nikon as the prize partner. Unlike most photographic
| competitions, which tend to involve photographers submitting their own work
| (crazy, I know), this one invited entrants to search for other people's
| online pictures, then submit the ones they felt were iconic British stuff, in
| the hope of winning a Nikon camera. As for the photographers themselves, they
| get nada--not even a link-back to their site or a credit of their name.
| photos
| Spotted the problem yet?

Nikon exits Microsoft photo contest

,----[ Quote ]
| Nikon has withdrawn its support for a photography contest hosted by computer
| giant Microsoft after a row over potential copyright infringement.
| [...]
| In a statement issued to Pro Imaging, Microsoft said: 'We have since taken
| steps to obtain the rights to use every image to be featured in the
| subsequent stages of the Iconic Britain competition.'

Grisoft subpoenas Microsoft

,----[ Quote ]
| The website, alleges Grisoft, infringes its copyrights and trademarks.
| The lawyers said: "The website's proponent, with MSN's facilitation, is
| taking a 'free ride' on our clients rights" and the proponent of the website
| is distributing AVG software for a fee.

School sues Microsoft over copyright

,----[ Quote ]
| But it's complicated because the wire reports Microsoft Philippines bought
| licences to print the manual back in 2004.

Microsoft to eBay name for $1m

,----[ Quote ]
| Portuguese outfit Microsoft Lda aims to cash in on its name by eBaying the
| brand and business for a starting price of $1m, Reuters reports.

Microsoft infringing on one of Apple Patents?

,----[ Quote ]
| Keep in mind I am not a patent researcher, and I am sure Apple is not
| going to sue Microsoft for abusing one of their patents, but it does
| at least look like Microsoft is abusing this patent.

Handling of Microsoft's copyleft violation

,----[ Quote ]
| A member of the Microsoft packaged software team lifting one of my
| images is definitely a case where the infringing party should have
| known better, as the company routinely takes action to protect its
| own IP.
