Tin Hat is a Linux distribution derived from hardened Gentoo

,----[ Quote ]
| Tin Hat is a Linux distribution derived from hardened Gentoo which aims to
| provide a very secure, stable and fast Desktop environment that lives purely
| in RAM. Tin Hat boots from CD, or optionally a pen drive, but it is not a
| LiveCD. It does not mount any file system from CD via unionfs or otherwise.
| Rather, Tin Hat is a massive image (approx. 2.3GB) which loads into tmpfs
| upon booting. One pays the prices of long boot times (5 minutes off CD, 2
| minutes off pen drives), but the advantage afterwords is that there are no
| delays going back to the CD when starting applications. Needless to say, this
| has some rather extreme advantages and disadvantages, making Tin Hat a rather
| particular distribution.

SUSE Linux to come with SELinux

,----[ Quote ]
| The next releases of SUSE Linux, OpenSUSE 11.1 and SUSE Linux Enterprise 11
| (SLES), will see the security extension SELinux moving into the SUSE
| distribution. SUSE's current security extension, AppArmour, will remain
| enabled by default. SUSE describe SELinux's inclusion as a technology preview
| and are not offering enterprise suppport or any ready made SELinux security
| policy files. SUSE say they are focussing on supplying the necessary kernel
| patches and changes to applications to allow for SELinux operation.

OLS: Smack for embedded devices

,----[ Quote ]
| The Simplified Mandatory Access Control Kernel (Smack) is a Linux access
| control mechanism akin to SELinux. As its name would imply, it is a much less
| complex scheme that requires far fewer resources than SELinux, which may make
| it more palatable to developers of embedded systems. Smack developer Casey
| Schaufler gave a talk at the recent Ottawa Linux Symposium (OLS) outlining
| how it could be used for embedded devices.

LinuxWorld preview: IBM engineer touts SELinux

,----[ Quote ]
| As SELinux adoption grows, therefore, the research-and-development challenge
| is to make it more user-friendly. "As we find issues, we'll fix them,"
| Shanker said. "We have to make it easier for the regular person to use. Once
| they learn it, they love it."

SELinux and Fedora

,----[ Quote ]
| Red Hat has undoubtedly done more to make SELinux usable than any other
| organization, but has it actually reached the point where it can be enabled
| by default for all desktops? The Fedora project clearly thinks so. Not only
| is SELinux enabled, but the installer no longer has an option to disable it
| or to put it into "permissive" mode. Most of the posts in a thread on the
| fedora-devel mailing list see that as the right choice, but some are not so
| sure.
