Netbooks Primed To Push Linux Into Mainstream
,----[ Quote ]
| Microsoft was late to realize the impact of Linux on netbooks. In Microsoft's
| first quarter earnings call in October, executives chalked up a four-point
| shortfall in Windows client revenue to netbooks, many of which ship with XP
| Home. Earlier this year, Microsoft extended the OEM deadline for selling XP
| Home on netbooks to June 30, 2010.
|
| In response to the netbook threat, Microsoft has drastically slashed the
| price of XP, according to solution providers.
|
| "Microsoft was terrified, because for the first time, Linux on the desktop
| was actually starting to get some traction in their sweet spot," said one
| solution provider, who requested anonymity.

Tiny PCs, tiny prices, big headaches

| The open-source Linux operating system costs less (as in zero) and provides
| far better security. And as it’s set up on the Acer, Asus and Dell, it
| features all the basic tools you might need: the Firefox browser, music and
| photo tools, and the Microsoft-compatible OpenOffice productivity suite.

Linux Carried Along on Netbooks Wave
,----[ Quote ]
| Morvay revealed to Linux Magazine Online that there were no specific figures
| for Linux netbook sales, but that it lay somewhere in the 40th percentile.
| Even though this figure seems a little high, it is known that many of the
| world's netbooks have Linux on board since their first inception 18 months
| ago.

| For example, notebooks with Linux make up about 5.5% of the notebook market
| in Germany...
