Open source - the ultimate globalization tool
,----[ Quote ]
| Another good example of open source’s internationalization powers came out of
| a recent discussion with Fedora Project Leader Paul Frields, who highlighted
| the increasing number of languages and localities supported in the Linux
| distribution. Frields reported that while there were only two or three
| languages supported in Fedora Core 4 a few years ago, the latest Fedora 10
| supports 16 languages. Further reinforcing that, Frields said the
| foreign ‘ambassador roles’ working to follow up on foreign participation is
| more than doubling every year and is now at about 600.

Bjarne Stroustrup on Educating Software Developers
,----[ Quote ]
| Bjarne Stroustrup is a leading figure in modern software development. As the
| designer of the C++ language – used in everything from the Google search
| engine to the iPhone – his contribution has impacted countless development
| projects.
|
| After 24 years as a researcher at Bell Labs, in 2002 Stroustrup became a
| professor at Texas A&M University, where he holds the College of Engineering
| Chair in Computer Science. The experience has given him insight into the
| all-important task of educating tomorrow’s software developers.
|
| In this interview he speaks frankly about the challenges and problems – and
| improvements being made – in computer science programs. Among issues like
| perceptions of offshoring and the need to balance the theoretical with the
| practical, he addresses complaints by tech companies about the lack of fully
| qualified CS graduates.

Open Source Heads Off to School
,----[ Quote ]
| Today brings a couple of new announcements on how open source software tools
| are pushing forward in the online education and educational collaboration
| markets. Fresh on the heels of news of its hookup with Dimdim, a maker of
| open source conferencing software, Zimbra has announced a new hosted set of
| services focused on schools. In other news, Wimba, which makes collaboration
| tools for education, is in a partnership involving the popular open source
| e-learning platform Moodle. Here are the details.

|
| While fees are implied by both Zimbra's and Wimba's services, it's good to
| see open source components going into these educational offerings. Some of
| these tools are getting lots of recognition. For example, Moodle was a
| finalist in SourceForge's most recent Community Choice Awards for the best
| open source software. Hopefully, these applications can keep the costs to
| schools low so that online collaboration and classes can continue to grow.
