Just what does it take to switch to desktop Linux (part 1)?

,----[ Quote ]
| I’d like to turn this into a series of posts, ultimately asking what it takes
| to switch to desktop Linux in education. Starting small, though, I’d like to
| answer ksheppard’s question. What is required to switch my superintendent to
| Linux on his desktop?

Crappy economy = great time for open source in schools

,----[ Quote ]
| Not only is it budget time for me right now as we put together our FY10
| plans, but it’s also time to figure out how we’re going to make it through
| the rest of FY09. Since so many people have lost jobs and/or homes recently,
| the state and town just aren’t getting the tax revenues for which they’ve
| budgeted, meaning that we’ve been asked to find ways to cut as much as 10%
| from this year’s budget.

| How about those Vista upgrades? If XP is headed out in your organization for
| whatever reason, now is the time to consider Linux. Before the flames begin
| in earnest, I completely understand that there are places where Linux still
| can’t work and possibly even places where a Vista upgrade may be justified.
| However, if user requirements can be met with free software instead of
| software carrying a licensing cost, we’d be remiss if we didn’t at least give
| it a second thought.

Vladivostok Gives Free GNU/Linux Netbooks

,----[ Quote ]
| I've written before about the increasing uptake of, and innovation around,
| free software in Russia. Here's another fascinating experiment, involving the
| Vladivostok State University of Economics and Services, which is giving
| students netbooks running the Mandriva distro...

Xavier School Deploys 600 Ubuntu Linux Desktops

,----[ Quote ]
| Xavier is the latest K-12 school to move Ubuntu Linux to the head of the
| class. In fact, the school has deployed more than 600 Ubuntu desktops,
| according to Pierre Tagle, Xavier’s consulting IT director. During a recent
| email exchange with WorksWithU, Tagle described why the San Juan,
| Phillipines-based school has fallen for Ubuntu.

All Russian Schools to Use Free Software

,----[ Quote ]
| I've often lamented how few schools in the UK use free software, and how
| difficult it is to break the lock that Microsoft has on the entire
| educational system. The pathetic state here is highlighted by contrast with
| Russia, which is making amazing strides in rolling out open source to
| schools.
