AMD Releases 3D Programming Documentation

,----[ Quote ]
| The 3D programming documentation today is 300 pages and is made up of a
| programming guide and register specifications. Among the areas covered in
| this 3D guide are the command processor, vertex shaders, fragment shaders,
| Hyper-Z, and the various 3D registers. Editor's Note: In the hours leading up
| to this public documentation drop, we've been told that tcore will now not be
| available for immediate download with this 3D programming documentation. We
| would expect tcore to be available very soon, if it's not already available
| for you from the download server.

The open source link of AMD and Nvidia

,----[ Quote ]
| Yesterday, however, came some news relevant to this beat which lets me
| comment on the whole ball of wax, and state clearly that Mr. Ruiz is not the
| problem.
|
| The announcement is AMD’s decision to open source some of its multicore
| development code. This comes nearly two years after Sun made a similar
| announcement regarding its SPARC chip.
|
| The Clue, as I’m fond of saying, is this.
|
| Hardware is software.
|
| The manufacturing margins from making chips are gone, all gone. That’s why
| Applied Materials is getting into solar panels. Fabs just aren’t so fabulous
| anymore.

Chips and Motherboards that support a Free BIOS - LinuxBIOS

,----[ Quote ]
| You can help our campaign by buying AMD CPU chips and not buying Intel. AMD
| have been helpful but Intel needs to be persuaded. Likewise, buy motherboards
| that support free BIOS. Tyan Computer Corporation are very helpful to the
| LinuxBIOS project and employ a full-time LinuxBIOS developer.

AMD Releases Additional R600 GPU Programming Documentation

,----[ Quote ]
| In the second NDA-free documentation dump, AMD has just released programming
| data on the M76 and RS690 graphics processors. While the RadeonHD developers
| have already had these documents, this information will help the free
| software community in understanding the internal workings of AMD's graphics
| processors.

Could AMD move open desktop Linux market?

,----[ Quote ]
| AMD’s recent move to fully support open source graphics could be the best
| news desktop Linux has had in a long time.

New Approach To ATI Linux Driver Installation

,----[ Quote ]
| Starting next month with the Ubuntu packaging scripts for the ATI Linux
| driver, the --autopkg and --installpkg arguments will be supported. When
| using this new --autopkg argument, the Ubuntu packaging scripts will detect
| the distribution version, install any build-time dependencies for that
| distribution, builds the ATI Debian packages (the same as running --buildpkg
| manually), installs DKMS (Dynamic Kernel Module Support) and libGL package
| dependencies, and then finally installs the ATI driver packages.

AMD Launches Open GPU Website

,----[ Quote ]
| AMD has today launched their new open GPU documentation website for
| register-level documents covering their ATI Radeon products. In addition,
| they are now providing an email address for any open-source developers who
| may have questions concerning these documents.

Future AMD GPUs To Be More Open-Source Friendly?

,----[ Quote ]
| AMD is on the heels of releasing the next set of GPU programming
| documentation to aide in the development of the open-source R500/600 drivers
| (xf86-video-ati and xf86-video-radeonhd). It's already been discussed what
| this NDA-free documentation release will have, but one of the questions that
| have repeatedly come up is if/when AMD will release information on
| accelerated video playback. AMD's John Bridgman has now stated what they plan
| to release in the video realm as well as a new requirement for their future
| graphics processors: being open-source friendly while avoiding DRM.
