Musicians used to make money from composing, performing, and teaching
(CPT). The whole concept of Album sales is a very recent one, and
certainly was never necessary for the survival of music or of musicians.
If giving away recordings is enough to persuade audiences to pay to see a
musician, then that's fantastic. The business-case to be made is about
how much to spend on a recording to be given away versus how much can
be made from CTP.
Of course, this means that a clear gap between composers, performers and
teachers will need to be visible, or where people are two or even three
of those, it will be clear. Furthermore, a gap between the C20 con of
the mime artist pretending to perform (eg., Posh Spice, and almost any
"boy" or "girl" band) must be recognised. In particular, audiences
should be informed if they are watching some people mime to a recording
or seeing it performed live.
