I think that the tide is turning somewhat, though.  For one, Brown is
not anywhere near so far up Bush's a**e as Blair was (see nessuno's post
elsewhere on this), the BBC and Becta are under strong pressure, too.
We very much need to set the terms for the patent debate, and then we
need to begin addressing the security versus secrecy agenda (as per the
posting I made a few days ago).

Also, we need Mr Shuttleworth/Ubuntu, IBM, Red Hat, Mandriva, Sun and
others to put on some good UK and EU bashes to being explaining to
our senior politicians why losing laptops shouldn't mean loss of data
(confusing secrecy with security), why have standard admin tools like nmap
will improve network security, to make it worse (difference between keys
and locks again), and why the business-models of open-source companies
are so different to those of proprietary ones.
