A brief history of Linux and the cosmos

,----[ Quote ]
| One could name Solaris, HPUX, OSX and Windows as alternatives, but their user
| base is tiny compared to the Linux user community (in HPC-related
| environments) due to the proprietary nature of those operating systems. Some
| of them may be a better choice than Linux in very specific areas, but not for
| the COSMOS style of use, with its wide range of applications and research
| tasks... From the COSMOS support team point of view, there is no alternative
| to Linux as the OS of choice for HPC applications."

What drives a mass Linux migration?

,----[ Quote ]
| A politician can sell the decision to migrate to FOSS by invoking the
| national interest - "why should we let a foreign company repatriate earnings
| abroad when the money can stay here?" Such a rallying cry would appeal to the
| constituency in Kerala and indeed to most of India. Many people have still
| not forgotten the last batch of colonial rulers. But it would not work in
| every country - most people in this world of ours have only self-interest at
| heart.
|
| In India's case one factor that makes any such migration noteworthy is the
| numbers involved - in Kerala, we are talking about 1.5 million students and
| 40,000 computers in 2832 high schools. Overseeing this are 60,000 trained
| teachers (who have been put through their paces by 86 private training
| institutes) and 5600 IT co-ordinators.

Major Linux Migrations: An Unbelievable List of Nearly 100 From Around the
Globe

,----[ Quote ]
| Thoroughly thrilled at the thought of Munich’s progress switching to Linux, I
| have actually been tracking and logging such migrations for a long time. As a
| matter of fact, on my OpenSUSE Linux blog, I offer a course wherein I explore
| all of the migrations of which I am aware. I wanted to share that list with
| ya’ll.
