It couldn't have been more the opposite. Along with Intel and others he was
price-fixing in an industry that was inevitably becoming more scalable for
home users (Microsoft wasn't a necessary ingredient of it). Until the OLPCs
and Eees came along, one had to pay at least $500 for a crappy PC (even in
recent years).
Moreover, this is a debate that involves Free software (where services and
integration bring revenu) versus secret code that gives it rulers
(programmers) control that makes it a tool for imperialism. South Africa sure
seems to have understood this by now. It's not just an import/export and
control debate; it's about control of markets, jobs, wealth, and intellectual
monopolies.
Gates was born a tyrant with the silver spoon of his lawyers/senators family in
his mouth. Using corruption he became a global monopolist, which to some in
America's right wing is called "patriotism".
Control of the media (Gates and Microsoft literally own some of it) is another
story and the glorification of this departure to 'politics' is something that
would make even Goebbels envy.
