They are also used for far more routine tasks such as
monitoring precious jewelry stores and other such.
In any event, Ezekiel's point is hardly subtle; obviously
Linux is some sort of subversive communistic software
and should be avoided at all costs, according to him.
(It might be communistic; I'll go that far. In software
contexts that's not nearly as evil as the USSR was,
especially since one can take what he wants source code
wise from FOSS. This may change as we are deluged with
source code versions, revisions, changes, and such, and
the problem becomes more of a bandwidth utilization issue.)
In any event, Linux is a logical solution for a general
control system that doesn't have special requirements, such
as realtime. (It probably could be adapted for realtime,
as well; I suspect there's a patch out there somewhere to
modify the scheduler or interrupt handling.)
