The future is bleak without XP
,----[ Quote ]
| As much as Microsoft wants to make you believe that Vista isn't so bad and
| it's really the next logical successor to Windows XP, it's not. Vista is a
| bloated mess of code that features a ridiculous number of security prompts
| thanks to an overzealous User Access Control, frequent crashes due to its
| inherent instability, and a generally poor design thanks to Microsoft's
| insistence on making its operating system look like Mac OS X.
|
| And to make matters worse, the operating system that everyone thought would
| be more secure than XP has proven to be just as bad. In fact, I would venture
| to say that now that XP is running Service Pack 3, it's even more secure than
| Vista.

Will Microsoft ever stop selling XP?
,----[ Quote ]
| Not so, says Microsoft. Didn't I see that press release that came out on June
| 3, in which they said XP would continue to be available on "nettops" like the
| Eee Box? Well, no, I didn't, nor had anyone in the office. Onto the intarwebs
| though, and there it is.
|
| I can see why I missed it the first time. Here's the title: "Following
| Success of Windows on Netbooks, Microsoft Extends Windows Offering to Nettop
| Devices". And on it goes, for almost 600 words, with almost no mention of the
| name "XP" (it is in there once, towards the bottom, buried in a quote from
| Cellnet's general manager). So, here's the deal: Microsoft is killing off XP
| for desktops, except for desktops that are - and this really is the sole
| criterion - "ultralow-cost". Bearing in mind that this is going to be an
| exploding market, that means Microsoft isn't really killing off XP at all,
| much as it would love to.

Feeling the heat at Microsoft
,----[ Quote ]
| If I ask you who is Microsoft's biggest competitor now, who would it be?
|
| Ballmer: Open...Linux. I don't want to say open source. Linux, certainly have
| to go with that.
