[News] Some New Press Advocacy of Open Source Software

Alternative web browsers - safer surfing?

,----[ Quote
| Web browsers are like surfboards for internet users. Internet Explorer is
| still the most widely distributed browser, but it doesn't take much
| scratching beneath the surface to discover that other programs provide better
| protection from phishers and other cyber-criminals. As an added bonus, the
| other programs are also generally easier to use and offer more functionality.
| The best known alternative browser is Firefox, from Mozilla. It continues to
| steal market shares from Internet Explorer, not least because it is
| considered a safer alternative.
|
| "Security holes are much less frequently discovered in Firefox," says Andreas
| Hentschel from Munich-based Chip magazine. "The Firefox developer community
| is quite ambitious, which means that its comfort factor is constantly on the
| rise," says Christian Immler, an Internet expert and book author.

| OpenOffice contains a full slate of applications from a word processor to a
| database to a presentation component. The word processor app, Writer,
| contains the usual word processing features. The spreadsheet, Calc, is a
| standard spreadsheet application that has the power to calculate, analyse,
| and do both reports or graphics. For multimedia presentations there is
| Impress. Its graphic module, Draw, can be used for everything from basic
| diagrams to three-dimensional illustrations.

Critical Vulnerability in Microsoft Metrics

,----[ Quote ]
| This is a small subset of all the vulnerabilities, because the
| vulnerabilities that are found through the QA process and the vulnerabilities
| that are found by the security folks they engage as contractors to perform
| penetration testing are fixed in service packs and major updates. For
| Microsoft this makes sense because these fixes get the benefit of a full test
| pass which is much more robust for a service pack or major release than it is
| for a security update.

Beware of undisclosed Microsoft patches

,----[ Quote ]
| Forget for a moment whether Microsoft is throwing off patch counts
| that Microsoft brass use to compare its security record with those
| of its competitors. What do you think of Redmond’s silent patching
| practice?
