This was not about "backup", it was about "Archival". They are not the
same thing. Exchange uses a transactioned database, which can also be
configured to ship transaction logs to other locations, which is the same
thing that Lotus Notes does.
The issue of archival is:
A) storage of all emails, whether or not the user has deleted them from
their inbox
B) Removal of old emails from inboxes to an archival storage system, where
they can be restored on demand.
In either case, the "flaw" in the system was with third party software, not
with Exchange.
